How we got here

Our story

A search for one traditional spirit led us deep into Oaxaca—and to families whose mezcal deserved a wider audience.

We set out in search of xtabentún. We found something much bigger.

Our trip south began with a collectivo, a bilingual cabbie, and a rough road into the Colinas Blancas. What we found was mezcal made the old way: small batches, village traditions, and extraordinary skill passed from one generation to the next.

Cuentacuentos grew from that encounter. We buy small-batch spirits from the families who make them and help navigate the long, complicated road to certification, packaging, and market. The point is not to smooth away the differences. The point is to let every producer, place, and agave speak clearly.

“Cuentacuentos” means storyteller. Every expression is exactly that: a record of soil, weather, wood, water, judgment, memory, and family.
